Home Safety Checklist

Studies show 75% of all falls happen in the home. Is your home as safe as it can be? Use this Home Safety Checklist to fix or eliminate problem areas that could be accidents waiting to happen.

All living spaces

___ Remove throw rugs.
___ Secure carpet edges.
___ Remove low furniture and objects on the floor.
___ Reduce clutter.
___ Remove cords and wires on the floor.
___ Check lighting for adequate illumination at night (especially in the pathway to the bathroom).
___ Secure carpet or treads on stairs.
___ Install handrails on staircases.
___ Eliminate chairs that are too low to sit in and get out of easily.
___ Avoid floor wax (or use nonskid wax).
___ Ensure that telephones can be reached from the floor.

Bathrooms

___ Install grab bars in the bathtub or shower and by the toilet.
___ Use rubber mats in the bathtub or shower.
___ Take up floor mats when the bathtub or shower is not in use.
___ Install a raised toilet seat.

Outdoors

___ Repair cracked sidewalks.
___ Install handrails on stairs and steps.
___ Trim shrubbery along the pathway to the home.
___ Install adequate lighting by doorways and along walkways leading to doors.
